JAMES

James' second name is Frederick, after myself, my father and my grandfather, the butcher. He was born at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield in 1954 on February 24th, the same birthday as grandfather. I took the kids over to see them both, but the Matron wouldn't let me in. Gay, Malcolm, and Paul had all had mumps, but got over it, but I had a stiff neck, the first signs, so it was a week before I could see my new family.

It is very hard to believe but James was an ash blond for the first few years. Now he seems to be able to grow a very heavy, very black beard at will.

Nothing much ever seemed to happen to him as a child. He went to Ipswich Convent as a Junior, passed his Eleven-Plus and went to St Joseph's College, where we paid towards his school fees. He played cricket and rugby - at full back for some unknown reason, which he didn't enjoy. Marjorie and I used to go and watch - we could see it wasn't his favourite pastime.

When we came over to Dunstable he went up to Kingsbury, now Queensbury School, got decent exam results and went on to work for the Architect's Department of the Local Authority in Luton, and later in Bedford where he met Louise Gregory, working in the same building, and they got married.

They started with a small 'starter' house in Kempston, and then moved to South Wales, where they worked for different architects, Louise preparing examination questions for the College. There was a gap whilst Tomos was growing up, but Louise is working again.

Strangely, Louise's family come from a few miles away from Ffrith Wen. Colwyn Bay, where Barbara and Lindsay lived.

Louise had a nasty time when a runaway school bus ran over her and Bethan in her pram. Lou had a fractured ankle and bruises but Bethan was not hurt, and seems to be unaffected. The pram was ruined.

James is now a Structural Engineer and is professionally qualified. Not long ago he, and some of his colleagues did a sponsored Ten-Pin Bowling Marathon and collected several thousand pounds for charities, mainly British Heart Foundation.
